What are GFCI and AFCI requirements in California homes?

GFCI devices protect people from shock in wet or damp areas (kitchens, bathrooms, garages, exterior). AFCI breakers help prevent fires from certain arcing faults on many branch circuits, including bedrooms and living areas, per adopted NEC rules in California. Exact requirements depend on code cycle and circuit type; a licensed electrician applies current amendments during upgrades or new work.

When upgrades trigger broader fixes

Extending or modifying a circuit often requires bringing that portion of the system up to current protection requirements, not just the single outlet you touched.
